Leicester City FC
Leicester City play in the Premier League at the King Power Stadium (32,261) in Leicester, Leicestershire, England.
The King Power Stadium is named after the Thai duty-free retail group that purchased Leicester in 2010. That ownership transformed a club that had spent most of its existence bouncing between the top two divisions into one of the Premier League’s most recognisable names on four continents. The route to global recognition was the 2015-16 season.
Leicester City won the Premier League title in May 2016 at 5000-1 odds. The starting point was Claudio Ranieri, appointed in July 2015 after leaving Fiorentina. The squad cost a fraction of those around them. Jamie Vardy scored in 11 consecutive Premier League matches to set a new record. N’Golo Kante covered more ground than any other midfielder in the league. Riyad Mahrez provided the technique that made the direct play coherent. They finished 10 points clear of Arsenal in second. The win was described by FIFA as the greatest sporting achievement of the twenty-first century’s first quarter.
Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the owner who built that team, died in October 2018 when his helicopter crashed in the car park outside King Power Stadium moments after departing a home match against West Ham. The grief in Leicester, and in Thailand, where Srivaddhanaprabha was a national figure, was immediate and extended. The club has carried his memory formally since: his image is on the stadium; his son Aiyawatt runs the board.
Relegation in 2023 ended three seasons of post-title navigation. Promotion back in 2024 returned the club to the Premier League, where the 2016 story remains the defining point of reference for a new generation of supporters discovering the team.
Leicester play on GMT in winter and BST (UTC+1) in summer. A Saturday 15:00 kickoff at King Power Stadium is 21:00 in Bangkok, 22:00 in Chiang Mai, and 10:00 in New York. The club’s Thai fanbase, by some measures the largest per capita of any non-Thai club in the Premier League, checks Leicester time for evening kickoffs that fall late in Southeast Asia.
