English Championship
The English Championship is the second tier of English football, sitting directly below the Premier League. Rebranded from the First Division in 2004 when the EFL restructured its naming, the Championship is widely considered the most competitive and physically demanding league in European football. Twenty-four clubs play 46 matches each across a grueling season that runs from August to May.
The Championship’s defining feature is its promotion race. Two clubs earn automatic promotion to the Premier League via league position, while third through sixth compete in the playoffs, culminating in the richest single match in world football: the Championship playoff final at Wembley. Promotion to the Premier League is worth an estimated 170 million GBP in broadcast revenue alone, making every match from January onward a high-stakes affair.
At the other end of the table, the bottom three face relegation to League One. The financial cliff between the Championship and League One is severe, adding genuine jeopardy to the survival battle. Former Premier League clubs regularly find themselves in this fight, and the league’s unpredictability means that preseason promotion favorites sometimes find themselves looking over their shoulders instead.
The Championship’s schedule is dense by any standard. Midweek fixtures are common, with Tuesday and Wednesday night matches scattered throughout the season. Saturday 3pm kickoffs remain the backbone, but the broadcast deal with Sky Sports means selected matches move to Friday nights, Saturday lunchtimes, and Sunday afternoons. For international followers, this schedule variability makes timezone conversion essential.
The league serves as a proving ground for young talent, with Premier League clubs loaning promising players to Championship sides for first-team experience. Many of England’s current internationals cut their teeth in this division, and scouts from across Europe monitor Championship matches closely.
Clubs like Leeds United, Sunderland, and Sheffield Wednesday bring massive fanbases and historic pedigree to the division. The atmosphere at Championship grounds is often rawer and more intense than in the Premier League, where corporate hospitality has smoothed some of the edges.
Check London time for kickoff conversions. Standard Saturday kickoffs are at 15:00 GMT/BST.
