Pohang Steelers
Pohang Steelers play in the K League 1 at Steelyard (25,000) in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea.
Three AFC Champions League titles. That number sets Pohang apart from almost every club in Asia. Their 1997, 1998, and 2009 ACL victories were separated by a decade, meaning the club’s continental capacity was not a single golden era but a recurring ability to build competitive squads across different generations. The 2009 final against Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma was an all-Korean affair that went to the wire, with Pohang’s Denilson scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 aggregate victory. No Korean club has won more Asian titles.
The Steelyard is the oldest purpose-built football stadium in South Korea still in continuous use as a top-flight venue. Built in 1990, it seats 25,000 in a compact configuration that amplifies atmosphere in a way modern bowl stadiums cannot replicate. POSCO, the steelmaking conglomerate headquartered in Pohang, founded the club in 1973. The relationship between the city’s industrial identity and the club’s nickname is literal: POSCO produces approximately 15% of South Korea’s total steel output, and the club was created to give the company’s workforce a sporting anchor.
The K League record tells a parallel story. Four domestic league titles (1992, 1999, 2007, 2013) bookend the continental successes. The 2013 title arrived under coach Hwang Sun-hong, a former striker who scored 50 goals for the South Korean national team and became one of the country’s most successful coaches. His understanding of the club’s culture as a hard-working provincial outfit translated into tactical organisation that outcompeted bigger-budget rivals from Seoul and Suwon.
When does Pohang play? All K League 1 fixtures are in KST (UTC+9). A Saturday 19:30 kickoff at Steelyard is 11:30 in Paris, 10:30 in London, and 06:30 in Los Angeles.
