Australia are a Full Member of the ICC, holding that status since the council's foundation in 1909, and are governed by Cricket Australia, whose predecessor, the Australian Board of Control for International Cricket, was formed at its first meeting in Melbourne on 6 May 1905. Australia contested the first ever Test match, played from 15 to 19 March 1877 against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, winning by 45 runs. Their first T20I came on 17 February 2005 against New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland.

Australia are the most successful side in World Cup history with six ICC Cricket World Cup titles (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015, 2023), including a record three in a row across 1999, 2003 and 2007, and a six wicket win over India in the 2023 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. They won their maiden ICC T20 World Cup in 2021, beating New Zealand by eight wickets in the Dubai final, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2006 and 2009, the only nation to defend that title. Their 209 run victory over India in the 2023 World Test Championship final at The Oval made Australia the first team to win ICC titles across all three formats.

Australia's home international grounds include the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, Adelaide Oval in Adelaide, the Gabba in Brisbane, and Optus Stadium in Perth.

Pat Cummins captains Australia in Tests and ODIs, having led the side to the 2023 World Cup and World Test Championship. Mitchell Marsh leads the T20I team and was named captain for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Australian Tests during the home summer typically begin at 10:30 AEDT, which converts to 23:30 GMT (previous day) in London, 18:30 EST (previous day) in New York, and 10:30 AEDT in Sydney. Day and night Tests and white ball internationals start later in the afternoon or evening. Check Australia time for live conversions.
