What Is the WEC?

The FIA World Endurance Championship is the top tier of global sportscar racing, jointly organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The modern WEC launched in 2012 as a revival of the World Sportscar Championship, which ran from 1953 to 1992. Its centrepiece is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, first held on 26-27 May 1923 at the Circuit de la Sarthe near Le Mans, France. The current circuit measures 13.626 km, combining permanent track sections with closed public roads including the famous Mulsanne Straight.

Races run between 6 and 24 hours, with each car crewed by two or three drivers who rotate through stints of roughly 45 to 60 minutes. At Le Mans, three drivers are mandatory and FIA regulations set maximum and minimum driving times per stint window to ensure all crew members share the wheel. The race starts at 16:00 local time in June; darkness falls within a few hours, and crews race through full night, dawn, and back into daylight.

The 2026 Season

The 2026 WEC calendar features eight rounds across five continents. The season opens at Imola in April after Qatar's Lusail round was postponed to October. Spa-Francorchamps follows in May before the 94th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 14-15 June. The second half visits São Paulo in July, Circuit of the Americas in Austin in September, and Fuji Speedway later that month. The season closes with the 8 Hours of Bahrain in November.

Eight manufacturers contest the Hypercar class in 2026. Ferrari enters as defending Le Mans champion after three consecutive victories (2023, 2024, 2025) with the 499P. Toyota fields the renamed TR010 Hybrid; Alpine, Peugeot, BMW, Cadillac, and Aston Martin all return. Genesis, Hyundai's luxury brand, makes its WEC debut with the GMR-001 through its Genesis Magma Racing division. Porsche withdrew its factory Hypercar programme, and Lamborghini paused its SC63 LMDh entry. In LMGT3, nine manufacturers compete under Pro-Am rules, with models from Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin, BMW, Chevrolet, Mercedes-AMG, Ford, Lexus, and Porsche (via Manthey Racing).

At Le Mans in 2025, the No. 83 Ferrari 499P of AF Corse, driven by Robert Kubica, Yifei Ye, and Phil Hanson, took Ferrari's 12th overall victory at the Circuit de la Sarthe and its third consecutive win.

What time do WEC races start? Start times vary by venue. Le Mans begins at 16:00 CEST, which translates to 14:00 GMT in London, 10:00 EDT in New York, and 23:00 JST in Tokyo. Six-hour races at European venues typically start between 11:00 and 14:00 local time. All times on this page auto-convert to your local timezone.
