Italy are an ICC Associate Member, first recognised as an Affiliate Member in 1984 and promoted to Associate status in 1995. The national side is governed by the Federazione Cricket Italiana, the Italian Cricket Federation, which was founded in 1980. Italy played their first official men's Twenty20 International on 25 May 2019 against Germany at the Sportpark Maarschalkerweerd in Utrecht, winning by 7 wickets.

Italy have yet to win an ICC global title, but they made history in July 2025 by qualifying for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, their first appearance at any ICC World Cup. Finishing among the top sides at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, Italy secured their place alongside the Netherlands, edging Jersey on net run rate to book a seat at the tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Italy's home international and domestic cricket is centred on Rome, where the Roma Cricket Ground hosts national fixtures, with the federation headquartered in Rome. Further venues across the country support the national programme and the European club competitions in which Italian sides compete.

Italy are captained by Wayne Madsen, the South Africa born, county experienced batter who led the side into their maiden T20 World Cup. He took over the T20I captaincy ahead of the 2026 tournament.

European T20Is involving Italy typically begin in the early afternoon. A standard 14:00 CEST start in Rome converts to 13:00 BST in London, 08:00 EDT in New York, and 22:00 AEST in Sydney. Check Italy time for live conversions.
