Group D includes the United States as host nation. Group G contains Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand. The runners-up from both groups arrive in Dallas with identical records in one sense: they finished second. In every other sense, their paths were nothing alike. A nation that finished behind a host nation, inside the tournament’s most watched group, carries different psychological weight than one that came second to Belgium in a group without the same scrutiny. That difference does not appear in the bracket. It shows up in the warm-up, in the dressing room conversation, in who looks more comfortable when the whistle goes.

AT&T Stadium hosted its second World Cup afternoon on the same site where Germany played their 1994 group stage as defending champions.
