SSC Napoli, based at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples with a capacity of 54,726, won the Serie A title in 2022-23 by 16 points, their first championship since 1990 and only their third in history.

The stadium’s name change from Stadio San Paolo to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in 2020 was not sentimental; it was accurate. Maradona played for Napoli from 1984 to 1991 and won the club’s only previous Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990. He did not just play well; he carried the club’s identity with him. Napoli had never won the league before his arrival. They won it twice with him. When he died in November 2020, the streets around the stadium in the Fuorigrotta neighbourhood of Naples filled with shrines overnight.

The 2022-23 season under Luciano Spalletti was the completion of a project that began with the sale of Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens, and Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer of 2022. Victor Osimhen’s 26 Serie A goals, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s attacking invention from the left flank, and Kim Min-jae’s dominant defensive presence produced a title by March. The South Korean centre-back’s departure to Bayern Munich and Osimhen’s subsequent transfer created a squad that had to be rebuilt almost entirely.

Antonio Conte arrived in the summer of 2024 with a mandate to restore the club’s identity and European presence. Romelu Lukaku’s addition gave the system a focal point built for Conte’s direct style.
