Royal Birkdale Golf Club is a par 70, 7,156-yard links course in Southport, England, designed by F.G. Hawtree and J.H. Taylor and host of the 2026 Open Championship. Founded in 1889 and granted its “Royal” prefix in 1951, Birkdale has hosted ten Open Championships, more than all but a handful of courses in the rota.
Walking Royal Birkdale feels like walking through a landscape that existed before golf and will exist long after. The towering sand dunes of the Lancashire coast rise 30 to 40 feet on either side of the fairways, creating corridors that channel both wind and drama. The par-4 17th runs along the highest dune ridge on the property, exposed to the full force of the coastal wind, with one of the most demanding tee shots in championship golf.
