Christophe Soumillon is a Belgian flat jockey who has won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe three times and established himself as one of the finest European riders of the 21st century. His combination of tactical intelligence, physical strength in a finish, and willingness to ride internationally has kept him at the top of the sport for over two decades.
Soumillon's Arc victories include Dalakhani (2003), Zarkava (2008), and Sottsass (2020), each demonstrating a different facet of his ability. He served for many years as principal jockey for the Aga Khan's racing operation, a role that gave him access to some of the best-bred horses in European racing and which he repaid with consistent big-race results. He has also won the Dubai World Cup multiple times and has been a regular competitor at the highest level in the Middle East, France, Britain, and beyond. His strength in the saddle is notable; he is one of the more powerful finishers among the current generation of flat jockeys.
His career has included controversy. In October 2022, Soumillon was suspended for dangerous riding after an elbow incident during a race at Saint-Cloud that unseated fellow jockey Rossa Ryan. The suspension was significant and led to the Aga Khan ending their retained agreement. Since returning, Soumillon has continued to compete at the top level as a freelance, riding winners across multiple countries and rebuilding his reputation through results rather than words.
In 2026, Soumillon will be targeting major prizes across Europe and internationally. He is expected to compete at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Royal Ascot, and potentially the Breeders' Cup and the Japan Cup. Fans can follow in Belgium time.
