Argentina are the dominant nation in world polo, governed by the Asociación Argentina de Polo (AAP), founded on 14 September 1922 through the merger of the River Plate Polo Association (established 1892) and the National Polo Federation (1921). No country has shaped the sport more.
Argentina have won the FIP World Polo Championship five times, in 1987, 1992, 1998, 2011 and 2017, more than any other nation, ahead of Brazil with three titles and Chile with two. They were the first world champions, winning the inaugural 1987 edition. At club level, the Argentine Open is considered the most important polo tournament in the world. With the Tortugas Open at Tortugas Country Club and the Hurlingham Open at Hurlingham Club, it completes the Triple Corona, the crown of the Argentine spring season.
The team's home is the Campo Argentino de Polo in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires, the most famous polo ground in the world and the home of the Argentine Open. In Argentina, polo is bound up in national identity in a way it is nowhere else, closer to the country's relationship with football than to an elite pursuit.
Adolfo Cambiaso, born in 1975, has held polo's maximum 10-goal handicap since 1994, when he became the youngest player ever to reach it, and is widely considered the best player in the world. He leads the generation of Argentine players who dominate the top of the global game.
For international fans, Argentine polo runs on Buenos Aires time, UTC-3 year-round, as Argentina does not observe daylight saving. Argentine Open finals are played in the afternoon; a 16:30 throw-in converts to 19:30 GMT in London, 20:30 CET in Berlin, 14:30 EST in New York, and 06:30 the following day AEDT in Sydney.
