Australia is governed by the Australian Polo Federation (APF), the national governing body for the sport, founded in 1924 and also known as the Australian Polo Council. The APF oversees polo across the Australian states and fields the national team in international competition.
Australia's defining results in world polo have come on home soil. The country has hosted the FIP World Polo Championship twice, in 2001 and 2017. At the 2001 edition, played at Werribee Park near Melbourne, Australia reached the final and finished runner-up, losing 10-9 to Brazil. The 2017 championship, held in Sydney, was won by Argentina. Those two hostings and the 2001 final run mark Australia as one of the strongest polo nations outside the Americas, even if it sits well behind the dominant South American countries at the highest level.
Australian polo is concentrated in New South Wales and Victoria, the states around Sydney and Melbourne where the country's leading clubs and grounds are based, among them Werribee Park, which staged the 2001 World Championship final.
For international fans, Australian polo runs on eastern Australian time. Sydney and Melbourne keep Australian Eastern Standard Time at UTC+10 through the winter and shift to Australian Eastern Daylight Time at UTC+11 in the southern summer. A 14:00 AEST throw-in converts to 04:00 GMT in London, 23:00 the previous evening EST in New York, and 01:00 in Buenos Aires. Check Sydney time and Australia time for live conversions.
