England is the country where modern polo was codified. The Hurlingham Polo Committee drew up the first formal English rules in 1875, at the Hurlingham Club in Fulham, London, and most of those on-field rules remain in force today. The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), established in 1925 as the successor to that committee, is now the governing body for polo in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, and a number of other countries. The sport's administrative home still carries the name of the club where the rules were written.
England's international record is defined by the Westchester Cup, polo's oldest international fixture, first played in 1886. England won the inaugural match, and the series has been contested on and off ever since, suspended during the Second World War and revived in 1992. The all-time record stands at twelve wins for the United States to eight for England. England's most recent victory came on 31 March 2023, defeating the USA 12-9 at the National Polo Center in Wellington, Florida. Great Britain also won Olympic polo gold in 1908 and 1920, both times with teams drawn from English clubs. England is not a dominant nation at the FIP World Polo Championship, where Argentina has set a standard that no other country has consistently matched, but England is consistently competitive among the second tier of polo nations.
The two pillars of the English season are the Cartier Queen's Cup at Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park, and the King Power Gold Cup at Cowdray Park in West Sussex. Guards Polo Club, founded on 25 January 1955, is England's leading polo venue, with 10 fields spread across Windsor Great Park and a royal connection that runs from the Duke of Edinburgh, who served as club president from 1955 until his death in 2021, to King Charles III, who became president in 2024. Queen Elizabeth II gave out the first silver cup at the inaugural Queen's Cup in 1960. The King Power Gold Cup, the British Open Polo Championship, has been played at Cowdray Park since 1956, making it older than almost every other major polo trophy in the world. Both tournaments are played at the 22-goal handicap level, the highest in British polo.
The leading English professional players of recent years have been Luke Tomlinson and his brother Mark Tomlinson, both from Gloucestershire, both former England team members, and both with career wins across the Queen's Cup and Gold Cup. Luke Tomlinson held a seven-goal handicap in Britain and eight goals in Argentina during his competitive peak, and captained the England team. Mark Tomlinson, who made his England debut in 2005, held a seven-goal handicap in Britain. James Beim, who was appointed England captain in 2014 succeeding Luke Tomlinson, also won both the Queen's Cup and Gold Cup during his career. English players at the elite level typically combine summer seasons at Guards and Cowdray with winter stints in Argentina, where the handicap ceiling is higher and the competition deeper.
England's polo runs on London time. During the British season (May through July), British Summer Time applies at UTC+1. A 15:00 BST throw-in at Guards Polo Club or Cowdray Park converts to 10:00 in New York, 11:00 in Buenos Aires, and 23:00 in Tokyo. For fans in Dubai, the 18:00 Gulf Standard Time start is comfortable evening viewing. Check London time and United Kingdom time for live conversions throughout the season.
