Spain to France Over the Pyrenees
Stage 3 is where the 2026 Tour de France transforms from a prologue into a race. The 196 km route from Granollers in Catalonia to Les Angles in the French Pyrenees crosses the border at altitude and finishes at a ski station perched at 1,650 metres. Any rider who arrived in Barcelona hoping to hide in the peloton for the opening week will be found out on this road.
The stage crosses from Spain into France via the Col du Puymorens (1,920m), one of the highest border crossings in the Pyrenees. The climb from the Spanish side begins gently through the Cerdanya valley before steepening into a sustained effort through pine forests and exposed switchbacks. The descent into France is technical and fast, dropping through Ax-les-Thermes territory before the final approach to Les Angles.
Les Angles
Les Angles is a purpose-built ski station above the town of Mont-Louis in the Capcir region. The final climb is approximately 8 km at an average gradient of 6.5%, with steeper sections in the last 3 km that can fragment a weakened group. It is not the most famous climb in the Pyrenees, but summit finishes on Day 3 of a Grand Tour are designed to provoke early aggression from riders who know they cannot afford to concede time.
The altitude at the finish — 1,650 metres — is significant. Riders who trained at altitude in the weeks before the Tour will feel an advantage over those who prepared at sea level. The thin air adds a physiological dimension to what is already a tactical minefield.
Race Context
Mountain stages this early in a Grand Tour tend to produce conservative racing from the main GC contenders. The yellow jersey is not won on Day 3, but it can be lost. Teams will ride to limit losses rather than attack for gains, and the real battle will be among the second-tier contenders fighting for stage honours and early positioning.
The breakaway will form on the flat kilometres through Catalonia, but the peloton will control the gap ruthlessly. The final 30 km — from the Col du Puymorens descent through to the Les Angles climb — is where the race narrows to fifty riders, then thirty, then ten.
