Lone Star Le Mans

The Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas is the first purpose-built Formula 1 venue in the United States, a 5.513-kilometre anti-clockwise track designed by Hermann Tilke and opened in 2012. Its layout deliberately incorporates elements inspired by celebrated circuits elsewhere: the sweeping uphill Turn 1 echoes Eau Rouge at Spa, the fast left-right sequence through Turns 3 to 9 references the Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel complex at Silverstone, and the technical final sector borrows from the slow corners of the Hungarian Hungaroring. The result is a circuit that rewards diverse car setups and challenges drivers across a wide range of speeds. Lone Star Le Mans is the name given to the WEC round at COTA, a title that connects the Austin race to the broader Le Mans heritage. The event serves as Round 5 of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship, scheduled for September 6. This is the first of two North American rounds in the season, placing the USA alongside Brazil as one of the championship's key markets outside Europe.

The WEC first visited COTA in 2013 and raced there annually through 2017, then returned in 2020 before settling into a regular slot. The circuit's proximity to Austin's vibrant cultural scene and the existing popularity of the United States Grand Prix at the same venue have helped build a strong local motorsport following. For the European manufacturer teams, COTA represents a logistics and strategic challenge quite different from the compact European calendar swing, requiring careful preparation for different climate conditions, time zones, and track characteristics.

September in Austin tends to bring warm temperatures and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms, adding a weather dimension to race strategy.
