The Lusail International Circuit sits approximately 20 kilometres north of Doha in Qatar, a 5.419-kilometre ribbon of tarmac that opened in 2004 and almost immediately became one of world motorsport's most versatile venues. Its 16 corners and 1.068-kilometre main straight are framed by permanent outdoor floodlighting, installed in 2007 in what was at the time the largest permanent sports venue lighting project ever completed. That artificial illumination allows racing after dark under conditions that produce striking visuals, with the track surface bathed in light against the Qatari night sky. Lusail has hosted MotoGP, Formula 1, and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
The Qatar 1812 km is named in reference to Qatar National Day, which falls on December 18; the race distance of 1812 kilometres aligns with that date, and the event carries a time limit of 10 hours. It originally joined the WEC calendar as the season opener in 2024, but the 2026 edition was moved from its planned position as Round 1 to the penultimate round of the season following concerns related to the regional security situation in the Middle East. Imola stepped in as the revised season opener in April. The rescheduled Qatar race takes place on October 24, 2026.
The longer format of the Qatar event, at up to 10 hours rather than the standard six, creates a distinctive endurance challenge. Night-time temperatures in late October in Qatar are considerably more forgiving than the summer heat the circuit experiences, but tyre degradation and energy management over extended stints still impose significant technical demands. Teams must balance aggressive race pace against the reality of managing hybrid systems and fuel loads across a race duration that falls somewhere between the standard six-hour events and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
As the penultimate round, the Qatar 1812 km carries substantial championship weight. With the Bahrain finale following only two weeks later, the Qatar result may effectively decide whether any manufacturer can still mount a challenge to the season leader heading into the closing weekend.
