The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in the Belgian Ardennes is widely regarded as one of the greatest racing venues in the world. Its current 7.004-kilometre layout snakes through dense forest with massive elevation changes and 19 corners that demand total commitment from drivers. The signature Eau Rouge and Raidillon complex, taken flat-out by modern Hypercars at speeds approaching 300 km/h, remains one of motorsport's most photographed sequences. Spa's notorious microclimate means conditions can shift from sunshine to heavy rain within a single lap, adding a layer of strategic complexity that suits endurance racing particularly well.

The 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps served as Round 2 of the 2026 WEC season on May 9, held under the TotalEnergies sponsorship banner. The race produced one of the most significant results in recent endurance racing history, with BMW M Team WRT claiming a stunning 1-2 finish for the German manufacturer.

The #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 driven by Robin Frijns led home the sister #15 car of Kevin Magnussen by under two seconds, marking BMW's first overall victory in an ACO-rules endurance race since the legendary V12 LMR triumph at Le Mans in 1999. That 1999 car, shared by Yannick Dalmas, Joachim Winkelhock, and Pierluigi Martini, had been BMW's sole Le Mans outright win, making the 27-year gap between victories all the more remarkable. The victory was achieved through an aggressive early pit stop strategy that put the BMW pair into clean air and allowed them to build a lead that proved impossible to close.

The #50 Ferrari of Antonio Fuoco rounded out the podium in third, while the #007 Aston Martin and the #7 Toyota completed the top five. For BMW M Motorsport, the Spa result arrived after years of building the M Hybrid V8 programme and elevated the German brand to genuine championship contender status heading into Le Mans.
