Peugeot re-entered top-level endurance racing in 2022 with the 9X8, a technically bold Le Mans Hypercar that initially ran without a rear wing, a distinctive design choice intended to extract downforce through underbody aerodynamics rather than conventional surfaces. That choice proved costly in race conditions, and the team endured a difficult early period before progressively unlocking the car's potential. By the latter stages of 2025, the 9X8 was consistently running at the front of the field, including a third place at COTA and a second at Fuji.

For 2026, Peugeot introduced the 9X8 Evo, an updated version of the car with a revised aerodynamic package. The team fields two entries: the number 93 for Nick Cassidy, Paul Di Resta, and Stoffel Vandoorne, and the number 94 for Loic Duval, Malthe Jakobsen, and Theo Pourchaire. The line-up blends endurance experience with single-seater pedigree, with Vandoorne a former Formula 1 driver and Pourchaire a young French talent making his mark in endurance racing.

The 2026 season has shown both the promise and the frustration of the Peugeot programme. At Imola, the season opener, both cars finished outside the top ten in a disappointing start. At Spa, however, the team delivered a breakthrough: Malthe Jakobsen steered the number 94 to Peugeot's first ever FIA WEC pole position during Hyperpole, a milestone that demonstrated the 9X8 Evo's one-lap pace is now genuinely competitive. The race ended in seventh place after an incident compromised the pole-sitting car, but the underlying speed was evident.

Peugeot's endurance racing heritage runs deep, stretching back to the 905 that dominated Le Mans in the early 1990s and the 908 that kept pace with Audi through the diesel era. The current programme carries the weight of that history and the expectation of a manufacturer that knows what winning at this level looks like.
