Bahrain International Circuit

Bahrain International Circuit lies in the Sakhir desert in the Kingdom of Bahrain, a flat and arid landscape that the circuit's designers have shaped into a 5.412-kilometre clockwise layout with 15 corners. The track was designed by German architect Hermann Tilke and opened in 2004 at a reported construction cost of approximately 150 million US dollars, positioning Bahrain as a statement of the Gulf region's ambitions in international motorsport. The circuit runs across three distinct zones: a fast outer section near the main straight, a tight and technical inner section that threads between sand-coloured walls, and a back straight sequence that generates high speeds before a late-braking hairpin. Permanent grandstand seating accommodates around 70,000 spectators, though attendance across the race weekend as a whole has reached over 100,000.

The Bahrain Grand Prix held on April 4, 2004 was the first Formula One race conducted anywhere in the Middle East, a milestone that reflected the broader internationalisation of the sport during that period. The circuit moved to a night-race format in 2014, with floodlighting installed to create a more accessible television broadcast window for European audiences. Bahrain has since become the traditional season-opening venue for Formula One, a position it has held since 2021, giving the circuit a prominence in the global racing calendar disproportionate to its geographic size. Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most Formula One victories at the circuit with five wins. The track also hosts an alternative outer circuit configuration using a dedicated loop that reduces the lap to approximately 3.5 kilometres and emphasises overtaking potential.

The WEC closes its season at Bahrain with the 8 Hours of Bahrain, and the 2026 race is scheduled for November 7 as the final round of the championship. The Sakhir desert night race takes place under full floodlighting, and the cool evening temperatures of the Gulf autumn represent a significant shift from the searing heat experienced at Bahrain earlier in the calendar year. Those conditions generally favour tyre life and allow teams to push harder across longer stints, which can produce strategic variation in the closing hours as the championship standings crystallise. The 8-hour format makes Bahrain longer than all other WEC rounds except Le Mans, adding extra complexity in terms of driver rotation, fuel load planning, and car management across the night.
