Cameron Mackray Champ was born on June 15, 1995, in Sacramento, California. He grew up learning the game from his grandfather Mack, who would take him to play at local facilities after school. Champ attended Texas A&M University and turned professional in 2017. He is a three-time PGA Tour winner and was once ranked as high as 66th in the world, reached in July 2021 after his third tour title.

Champ made an immediate impression as an amateur when he qualified for the 2017 U.S. Open through sectional qualifying and made the cut, finishing T32. He also represented the United States in the 2017 Walker Cup on the winning side. After turning professional, he earned his PGA Tour card by winning the 2018 Utah Championship on the Web.com Tour, then claimed his first tour title the same year at the Sanderson Farms Championship, shooting 21 under par for a four-stroke victory. Two further wins followed: the 2019 Safeway Open and the 2021 3M Open by two strokes. His best performances in the majors include a tie for tenth at the 2020 PGA Championship and a tie for tenth at the 2022 Masters Tournament at Augusta National.

Champ is recognized across the PGA Tour as one of the longest drivers in the game. He led the tour in driving distance during the 2018-19 season with an average of 317.1 yards and led the 2017 U.S. Open in driving distance at 337 yards. In recent seasons he has worked through a challenging period competing for starts. He has spoken openly about the mental challenges that accompanied that stretch.
