John VanDerLaan is a professional golfer from Southbury, Connecticut. He attended Florida Southern College, an NCAA Division II program in Lakeland, Florida, where he played alongside his younger brother Michael.
Florida Southern has a long record in Division II golf. The program counts nine individual national champions among its alumni, including PGA Tour winner Lee Janzen, who claimed the individual title in 1986. VanDerLaan joined that list in 2018 when he won the Division II individual national title outright. The Mocs had also taken the 2017 Division II national team championship the season before, making VanDerLaan part of one of the most decorated runs in the program's history. His brother Michael followed with the 2019 individual title, meaning two consecutive VanDerLaan brothers won the individual crown for the same program, from the same Connecticut hometown.
After turning professional, VanDerLaan competed on the Korn Ferry Tour, the developmental circuit that feeds the PGA Tour. He broke through at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio, in September 2025. The event is part of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals and is played at Ohio State University Golf Club. He closed the week at 17-under 267, winning by three strokes over Zecheng Dou and Trent Phillips. That total matched the tournament 72-hole record previously set by Adam Svensson in 2021 and David Lingmerth in 2022.
