Martin Kaymer was born on December 28, 1984, in Düsseldorf, West Germany, and grew up in Mettmann nearby. He turned professional in 2005 and now competes on the LIV Golf League as captain of Cleeks GC. His headline achievement remains winning two major championships, becoming only the second German after Bernhard Langer to reach world No. 1.

Kaymer's rise through professional golf was rapid. He dominated the EPD Tour in 2006 with five wins from 14 events, then earned the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award on the European Tour in 2007. Early victories on what is now the DP World Tour included the 2008 Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and BMW International Open, followed by the 2009 Open de France. His breakthrough at major level came at the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, where he defeated Bubba Watson in a three-hole playoff to become the first German to win that title. He reached world No. 1 in February 2011. Three years later, he produced one of the most dominant major performances in modern history, leading wire-to-wire at the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 to win by eight strokes. Weeks later he added the 2014 Players Championship for a remarkable spring run. He also holed the putt that secured Europe's cup retention in the 2012 Ryder Cup singles.

Kaymer built his game around a precise, repeatable fade, and his composure under pressure became a defining trait. After reaching No. 1 he undertook a swing rebuild to add a draw, which interrupted his form for a period. At the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink, he shared the first-round lead with a 3-under 67, his lowest major round since 2020 and the first time he had held at least a share of the lead in a major since his 2014 U.S. Open wire-to-wire victory.
