Martin Charles Campbell Laird was born on 29 December 1982 in Glasgow, Scotland. He moved to the United States to study at Colorado State University, graduating with a marketing degree in 2004, the same year he turned professional. He went on to become one of the most successful Scottish golfers in PGA Tour history, reaching a career-high world ranking of 21st in March 2011.

Laird made an immediate mark on the PGA Tour when he won the 2009 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, becoming the first Scot to win a PGA Tour event in America since Sandy Lyle won the 1988 Masters. He followed that with a victory at the 2011 Arnold Palmer Invitational, then added a third win at the 2013 Valero Texas Open, and after a seven-year drought returned to the winner's circle at the 2020 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Known as a long hitter, Laird ranked consistently in the PGA Tour's top 20 for driving distance in 2009, 2010, and 2011. His ball-striking ability brought him a T20 at the 2011 Masters Tournament and a T21 at the 2013 U.S. Open, his best results at the four major championships.
