S.Y. Noh, whose full name is Noh Seung-yul, was born on 29 May 1991 in Gangwon Province, South Korea, and grew up in Seoul. He turned professional in 2007 and competes on the Korn Ferry Tour, with past stints on the PGA Tour and the Asian Tour.

Noh's breakthrough came on the Asian Tour, where he was named Rookie of the Year in 2008. By 2010 he had won the Maybank Malaysian Open on the Asian Tour and claimed the Asian Tour Order of Merit, announcing himself as one of the more promising young Asian professionals of his generation. He earned his PGA Tour card through Q-School in late 2011 and captured his lone PGA Tour title at the 2014 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, shooting a composed final-round 71 in difficult conditions to win by two shots. His best results in the four major championships came at the 2012 PGA Championship (T21) and the 2011 U.S. Open (T30). He also holds a Web.com Tour win at the 2013 Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship.

Noh's career was interrupted when he fulfilled his mandatory South Korean military service obligation beginning in October 2017. He returned to professional competition in 2019 and has been working his way back through the Korn Ferry Tour, the developmental circuit where he continues to compete for PGA Tour re-entry.
