Kurt Kitayama is a Japanese-American golfer from Sacramento, California, ranked inside the world top 35, with victories on the PGA Tour, European Tour, and Asian Tour. He won the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, one of the PGA Tour's flagship events, finishing at 13-under par in a dominant wire-to-wire performance.
Kitayama's path to the PGA Tour was unconventional by American standards. After playing college golf at UNLV, he bypassed the traditional Korn Ferry Tour route and built his career internationally, winning on the Asian Tour and the European Tour before earning his PGA Tour card. He won the 2019 Mauritius Open and the 2019 Oman Open on the European Tour, back-to-back victories that demonstrated his ability to win in different conditions and on different continents. That international experience gave him a versatility that many American-trained players lack; he has played on firm fairways, in heavy wind, and on courses designed with philosophies far removed from the target-golf setups common on the PGA Tour.
The Japanese-American heritage is a meaningful part of Kitayama's identity. His family's roots connect him to a country where golf is deeply embedded in the culture, and he has spoken about the pride he takes in representing that background on the world stage. At UNLV, he developed the power game and competitive edge that would serve him on tour, but the international years refined his shot-making and broadened his understanding of how to play golf on unfamiliar terrain. His swing produces consistent distance, and his iron play from the 175 to 200 yard range is among his strongest attributes.
In 2026, Kitayama's global experience is an asset across all four major venues. Augusta National rewards the creative shot-making he developed on international tours. Aronimink will test his mid-iron precision on a Donald Ross design. Shinnecock Hills plays like the firm, demanding courses he encountered in Europe and the Middle East. Royal Birkdale is links golf, a style his international background has prepared him for better than most Americans. He will compete at all four: The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship. Fans following from the United States can check tee times in United States time.
