Sepp Straka is an Austrian golfer, born in Vienna and raised in the United States, with multiple PGA Tour victories and the distinction of being the first Austrian to compete and contend at the highest level of professional golf. He attended the University of Georgia, where he played alongside fellow future tour player Keith Mitchell, before turning professional and working his way onto the PGA Tour through the Korn Ferry Tour.
Straka’s first PGA Tour victory came at the 2022 Honda Classic, a tournament that tests patience and course management around PGA National’s demanding layout. He added a second win at the 2023 John Deere Classic and a third at the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship, a Signature Event with a limited field of top players. That St. Jude win was particularly significant: beating a Signature Event field proved that his game could compete against the strongest opposition the tour assembles. He represented Austria at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021) and has carried the Austrian flag in a sport that has virtually no professional tradition in his home country.
Straka’s game is methodical and precise. His swing produces a consistent ball flight with moderate length, and he compensates for any distance disadvantage with iron play that ranks among the best on tour in strokes gained approach the green. He is a player who builds rounds through steady accumulation, making pars when pars are difficult and converting the birdie opportunities his approach play creates. He does not have the flashiest game in the field, but he has one of the most reliable. When the conditions are tough and the course is demanding accuracy over power, Straka tends to move up the leaderboard while more aggressive players fall back.
In 2026, Straka’s precision suits Shinnecock Hills at the U.S. Open, where accuracy off the tee and on approach is rewarded above all else. Aronimink at the PGA Championship and Augusta National at The Masters test different skills. Royal Birkdale hosts The Open Championship. He will compete at all four.
