Shane Lowry is an Irish golfer from Clara, County Offaly, and the 2019 Open Championship winner. His victory at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, the first Open held there in 68 years, produced one of the most emotional major championship triumphs in recent memory.
Lowry’s game is ideally suited to links golf and difficult conditions. He possesses a soft touch with his wedges, an excellent short game, and the ability to control ball flight in wind. His putting on slow, undulating greens is a strength, and he has an instinctive understanding of how to manage a golf course when scoring is difficult. He is not the longest hitter on tour, but his creativity around the greens and his feel for the game compensate for any distance disadvantage. His competitive fire, often visible in moments of celebration or frustration, adds to his appeal.
The 2019 Open at Royal Portrush was the pinnacle. Lowry built a four-shot lead heading into the final round and, despite heavy rain and enormous expectation from the home crowd, closed it out with a bogey-free 69 to win by six shots. The scenes on the 18th green, with thousands of Irish fans chanting his name, remain some of the most powerful images in modern golf. In other majors, Lowry has posted strong results at the Masters and PGA Championship, and his runner-up finish at the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont showed he can compete on the toughest American course setups.
Lowry will compete at all four 2026 majors: The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship. Irish fans can follow in Ireland time.
